John 15:1-8 — The Vine and the Branches

**John 15:5 — "I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."**

This passage is set in the Upper Room, just hours before Jesus' arrest. These are some of His final words to His disciples — and He chose an agricultural metaphor they would instantly understand.

**The Vine (Jesus):** The source of all life and nourishment. Without the vine, branches don't just struggle — they die. Jesus isn't saying "try harder to be connected." He's stating a spiritual reality: life flows from Him, not from our effort.

**The Branches (Us):** Our job isn't to produce fruit by sheer willpower. Our job is to stay connected. Fruit is the natural result of abiding, not the result of striving. An apple branch doesn't strain to produce apples — it just stays attached to the tree.

**The Vinedresser (The Father):** Verse 2 shows the Father's role — He prunes. Pruning isn't punishment; it's preparation. He cuts away what's dead so what's alive can thrive.

**Application:** Are you trying to produce fruit without abiding? Busyness is not the same as fruitfulness. The most productive thing you can do today is spend time with the Vine.
