When the Answer Is "Not Yet"

We love the "yes." We can handle the "no." But the "not "yet"—that's where faith gets tested.

David was anointed king as a teenager. But he didn't sit on the throne until he was 30. Over a decade of waiting. Running from Saul. Hiding in caves. And yet, in those caves, he wrote some of the most powerful psalms we still sing today.

Think about that for a moment. The psalms we turn to in our darkest moments were birthed in David's darkest moments. Psalm 34, written while he was fleeing from Abimelech. Psalm 57, written while hiding in a cave. Psalm 142, written from the depths of loneliness. What felt like abandonment was actually an anointing. God was not just preparing David for the throne. He was giving the rest of us a language for our own waiting.

God wasn't wasting time. He was building a king.

Here is what we often miss: the process is not punishment. It's preparation. Every closed door, every delayed answer, every season of silence is shaping you into someone who can handle the weight of the promise. If God had made David king at 17, the crown would have crushed him. The years in the wilderness were not wasted. They were weight training.

Your "not yet" season isn't a waiting room. It's a workshop. God is doing something in you that the answer itself could never accomplish.

Consider Joseph. He had a dream at 17, but he didn't see it fulfilled until he was 30. Thirteen years of slavery and prison. And at the end of it, he could say, "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good" (Genesis 50:20). That perspective doesn't come from the palace. It comes from the pit.

The same is true for you. The rejection, the betrayal, the closed doors — God is using all of it. None of it is wasted. The same God who was faithful in the cave will be faithful on the throne.

Don't despise the process. Don't rush the season. Don't try to shortcut what God is building. The roots grow in the dark. The foundation is laid in silence. The character is formed in the waiting.

Keep trusting. Keep showing up. Keep praying. Keep obeying. Your "not yet" has an expiration date. The God who promised is faithful. And when the answer finally comes, you will look back and see that the waiting was worth it.
